A rock cake, also called a rock bun, is a small, hard fruit cake with a rough surface resembling a rock.

Rock cakes originated in Great Britain, where they are a traditional teatime treat, but are now popular in many parts of the world. They were promoted by the Ministry of Food during the Second World War since they require fewer eggs and less sugar than ordinary cakes, an important savings in a time of strict rationing. Traditional recipes bulked them with oatmeal, which was more readily available than white flour.

A typical modern recipe for 12 cakes requires about 200 g of flour, 100 g of butter or margarine, 50 g of sugar, 1 beaten egg, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 2 tablespoons of milk, 150 g of dried fruit such as currants, raisins, candied orange peel, etc., and a pinch of nutmeg and mixed spices. Usually, flour and butter are first mixed until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs; then the other ingredients are added to create a stiff dough, which is dropped from a spoon to a baking tray or roughly formed with two forks. The cakes (optionally sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon) are baked for about 15 minutes at 200 °C,retaining an uneven form and contour.

Variations include the Jamaican rock bun, which is similar but can include grated coconut, and the traditional British rock cake, which contains oatmeal.

Rock cakes are mentioned as an alternative to doughnuts in the 1940 British film Night Train to Munich. They are also a common feature in the popular Harry Potter series of books and films. In the Benny Hill song Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West) – performed first on television in 1970, later released as a single in 1971 in the UK – Ernie is killed by a rock cake below the heart and a pork pie to the face. In the British soap opera EastEnders, they are stocked in the local cafe, and Tamwar Masood frequently eats them as an alternative to pastries. Early in The African Queen, Mr. Allnut (Humphrey Bogart) is offered a rock cake while at tea. Detective Alan Grant is offered rock buns in Josephine Tey's novel, The Daughter of Time.

They are also referred to in an early scene in the 1939 movie, Goodbye Mr. Chips.

This is an old fashioned recipe that I cooked for the first time in school when I was 8 years old. It became a favourite and has been diligently written in my personal recipe book, but one I had forgotten about until the other day.

It’s not a very sweet recipe, so not one of DH’s favourites, but a lot of the flavour comes from the warm cinnamon goodness and juicy sultanas. If I remember correctly, the original recipe had mixed, dried fruit and peel, but sultanas are just enough for me. If you would like, substitute some of the sultanas for mixed, dried fruit. They’re not glamorous looking, but nice with a morning cuppa.

Ingredients

2 cups of self-raising flour

1/3 cup sugar

1/4 tsp cinnamon

90g (3oz) butter

1 cup sultanas

1 egg

1/3 cup of milk

extra sugar

Method

Preheat oven to ‘moderately hot’ about 180°C (360°F). Grease a baking tray or cookie sheet with butter.
Sift flour, sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl. Using your fingertips, rub in the butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
Add sultanas and mix well breaking up clumps.
Beat the egg and add. Add sufficient milk to make a moist but stiff consistency. Depending on the flour you may need a little less or a little more milk.
Spoon mixture into rough lumps onto the greased tray. Leave space for slight spreading. Sprinkle with sugar.

Bake for 10 – 20 minutes depending on size or until cooked through. Loosen on trays while hot and allow to cool or eat warm.

Cake incorporates a wide range of genres into its music, including country music, Mariachi, new wave, college rock, jazz, funk, Iranian folk music, Brazilian music and hip hop.McCrea himself cites Hank Williams, Tom Zé, the Golden Gate Quartet and Sly and the Family Stone as particular influences. The band is most often noted for three things: the prominence of DiFiore's trumpet lines,McCrea's ironic, sarcastic lyrics, and his "droll, deadpan ... monotone" vocals.DiFiore's trumpet work originated with McCrea's desire for a second melodic instrument to go with a song he had written; "A lead guitar playing those lines would have been really hokey. I like it when it's a contrapuntal thing, where the guitar is doing one melody, the vocal is doing another melody, and the trumpet plays this third melody. If the music can be transparent enough, you can hear all three at the same time".
